The perfect home in an imperfect neighborhood may still leave a lot to be desired. When you buy a house, you’re essentially buying a stake in the community in which it is located. If you dislike important elements of that community, you’re unlikely to enjoy living there.

Unfortunately, a lot of first-time homebuyers overlook neighborhoods when visiting homes for sale. Many purchase their “dream houses” only to become miserable down the road. With this in mind, we’ll provide a quick guide for deciding whether a community offers the features you and your family consider important. One side note: the following discussion does not address community developments that might make a home a good investment. Instead, we’ll focus on whether the neighborhood poses a good fit. More »

If you have kids then you’d probably have heard of classic Charlotte Diamond songs like “Slippery Fish” and “I am a Pizza”.

Charlotte Diamond will be visiting the Southbay Botanical Gardens in Torrance/Palos Verdes on Sunday, August 28!

Picnic starts at 4:30pm and the concert will go from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Tickets are $10 adults $8 children 2-12 advance / $12 adults $10 children at the door.

It’s sounding like a broken record… CEO Magazine calls California “Portugal of the Pacific” as it rolls out its CEOs survey, ranking CA worst state to do business 5 years in a row, citing onerous regulations and astronomically high taxes. Magazine title says: “Why Texas Whipped California – and What It Means for You” (as CEO). Other than having to pay $800 in corporate taxes RIGHT OFF THE BAT whether or not you’ve made any money (and if you didn’t make money and actually lost money… guess what, you still owe Sacramento $800), and the insane amount of bureaucracy and regulations that I’m convinced goes primarily to support the high salaries and operational budgets of this state’s politicians, I can’t imagine why CEOs are prejudiced against California.

At Third Street Promenade today I was finally overcome by the delicious smells of soaps and bath products at the Lush USA store!

I stopped in and bought 2 types of solid shampoo bars and also their solid conditioner bar: the squeaky green shampoo bar (pictured right) with rosemary and the soak and float bar with the “antimicrobial” effects. This one’s got tar in it, so the lavender helps with the strong odor. This smells much better than the Jason brand anti-dandruff shampoo with sulfur (that one is super pungent I feel as if green vapors were coming up from the bottle) sold at Whole Foods.

The person who rang up my order was super nice, and he even remembered that I should get a free container tin for my shampoo bar because I bought 2. Then he threw in a sample of the ocean salt facial scrub.

I can’t wait to try these out!

Today is one of those Sundays when my family went to Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade (TSP) early and arrived just as the restaurants were opening in the renovated mall, which, by the way, is an amazing and gorgeous use of outdoor/indoor space.

There were only a few TSP artists performing before noon – but Mike Sullivan is one of them. A few weeks ago when we visited he was there with a drummer. Today he was there performing by himself sans drummer. He was singing “Crazy”, which kinda grew on me, so on my way back I dropped $10 into the black cup and grabbed a CD.

I also dropped a few bucks for a singer who sang “I did it my way”, which reminded me of our Uncle Jimmy back in Singapore, and it made me happy. I also felt happy supporting some of these street performers whenever I can, because it’s not easy to put yourself out there and perform!

I started keeping tabs of the adjectives my husband was using to describe the day… idyllic, breezy, chillaxing, so cal… yea it was a gorgeous day!
