Got the property tax bill. Of course we’ve been getting junk mail for months telling us to pay $ to get our property tax potentially lowered. Peter Viles from LA Times Blog seems to agree that going with companies providing this service is a good idea, to save yourself ‘the headaches’ ( http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laland/2008/05/fighting-your-p.html ).
I’ve been told that you can do this yourself for free, and that the LA County Assessors Office is aware of the growing # of companies soliciting for these services, and encourages home owners to file the forms themselves ( http://assessor.lacounty.gov/extranet/guides/prop8.aspx ). Others say these companies are scammers.
I printed out the form, did a Zillow search for comparable sales, and filled it out myself. Let’s see what happens.
